What Kind Of Tanks Are There?
There are two kinds of tanks on the market to choose from – sub ohm tanks and standard tanks. Usually, a standard tank is used with a fixed or variable voltage device that does not exceed 10 – 12 watts of power. This ensures that vapers enjoy the best possible flavour. However, it does reduce the amount of vapour produced, which is bad news for cloud chasers who usually prefer to use a sub-ohm tank.
Sub-ohm tanks are designed specifically for this purpose, and while the flavour is still good when using these clearomizers, their design means that the flavour is less intensive than that produced with a standard tank. The reason for this is because the liquid flows more efficiently to compensate for the higher temperatures produced in high wattage vaping. If you make the mistake of using a standard tank for sub ohm vaping you will find that your wick becomes burnt and you end up with an unpleasant taste.
Conversely, if you use a sub ohm tank when vaping at a standard wattage you will usually find that the atomizer will be flooded. Luckily, if you are an experienced vaper who knows how to make their own coils and wicks, you can easily adapt your clearomizer setup to accommodate your vaping style.
Is Sub Ohm Vaping For Me? The Advantages and Disadvantages
Although sub ohm vaping does have its negatives, many vapers believe that the benefits outweigh the disadvantages.
- An impressive production of vapour – one of the best things about sub-ohm vaping is that it offers excellent vapour production it offers and this also generally results in a better nicotine hit. Sub ohm vaping uses a larger coil and wick, as well as more battery power which spreads the head over a greater amount of e-liquid. It is this which produces the huge clouds which are so favoured by cloud chasers.
- Warmth – as sub ohm vaping produces more heat, the vapour will also be warmer. While this isn’t ideal for anyone who prefers a cooler vape, those who like their vapour to be warm will prefer sub ohm.
- Excellent flavour – As well as producing impressive vapour, a sub ohm tank usually offers an improved flavour over that produced by a standard clearomiser. Although coil quality and the tank’s airflow plays a part in this, generally you can expect great flavour when sub ohm vaping.
- Innovation – most new clearomizers are now sub ohm, and this means that more cutting edge technology is used in the development of sub ohm vaping devices. You can therefore usually enjoy excellent features such as designs that fill from the top, temperature control coils, RBA heads and protection from spit back when choosing a sub ohm tank.
- Extra power consumption – the increased vapour produced by a sub ohm tank is due to the high wattage required to obtain the top level of performance. When you use a higher ohm coil, you can lower your wattage, and your battery will last for longer.
- More e-juice consumption – The more e-juice is vaporised, the more vapour you’ll produce, and this is why sub ohm tanks use considerably more e-liquid than a regular tank. That means that vaping will be a more expensive pastime, especially when you opt for one of the pricier e-liquids.
- Not ideal for mouth to lung vaping – When you’re a mouth to lung vaper, you might want to steer away from sub ohm tanks. This is because the wide airflow setting is better for direct to lung vaping.
- Unsuited to discreet vaping – if vaping discreetly is important to you, sub ohm tanks are the worst possible choice. The large vapour clouds produced mean that you will attract attention when vaping in this style.
- Battery safety – as more current is required when using a sub ohm device, battery compatibility and safety is very important. You need a greater knowledge in this area to be able to sub ohm vape safely to be certain that your vape pen is suited to use with sub ohm tanks.
While there may appear to be more negatives than positives to sub ohm vaping, most vapers find that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages as they are more crucial to the enjoyment of the vaping experience. A high capacity battery can still last for at least a day when you vape at a high wattage and if you get a better quality of vape then the extra cost of e-liquid is well worth it. If mouth to lung vaping isn’t your thing, the wide airflow won’t be an issue and if you’re not bothered about discreet vaping then big vapour clouds will be an advantage, not a negative. Although good knowledge of battery safety is important to sub ohm safely, it isn’t that difficult to get to grips with.
How do you know which sub-ohm tank will best suit your needs and preferences? There are so many different options available today that it can be hard to choose the best vape tank in the UK. Here, we look at a brief guide to choosing the right tank for sub ohm vaping, so that you can enjoy the perfect vape.
Tank size may be a clear way of distinguishing between the various tanks. However, it isn’t as much of a key issue as you might think. From 20th May 2017 new laws have been introduced in the UK to limit the size of tanks to 2 ml, and while this may sound very small, it’s important to remember that the advantage of having a smaller tank is that you can switch your e-liquids more frequently to enjoy better variety. Another added advantage is that a 2ml tank is smaller and lighter than the old larger models, making them easier and more discreet to carry around when you’re vaping out and about.
Which Coil Type?
The majority of new vapour tanks for sub ohm vaping are compatible with various coil types, and you should bear this in mind when you purchase a new vape tank. Each material has a different purpose: kanthal is suited to vaping at a standard variable wattage, while titanium, stainless steel and nickel coils are suited to TC (temperature control) vaping. Owners of TC mods should always check the kinds of coils that they can use with it.
Most support nickel, however, the most up to date devices will also be compatible with stainless steel and titanium too or even have an adjustable temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) which can be used to set up the mod with any suitable coil. Some sub ohm tanks come with other coil types, such as Clapton coils which feature an outer wire wound around a centre core resulting in a larger surface area for better flavour and vapour production.
Coil alignment is also a consideration as vertical coils have a better performance, and the number of coils built into the atomiser head is also an important element to bear in mind.
While there is a whole class of RTAs (rebuildable tank atomizers) which have been specially designed for vapers who want to build their own coils, some of the top rated vape tanks for sub ohm vaping also come with an RBC head as well as pre-built options. This excellent feature is ideal for rebuilders or for vapers who want a sub tank that offers something a little bit extra. On the other hand, if you feel intimidated by the idea of rebuilding, there’s no need to worry. While a lot of vapers enjoy this rewarding pastime, others lack the time, the interest or the ability to take up the hobby. The good news is that rebuilding is not a necessary skill to enjoy sub ohm vaping, and there are plenty of non-rebuildable options on the market which are highly rated and produce excellent clouds and flavour without you having to develop any of your own rebuilding skills.
Most clearomizers for sub ohm vaping have cotton wicks (generally made from organic Japanese cotton) however some offer different options such as ceramic wicks which are extremely heat resistant meaning that they can be dry-burned without incurring any damage for a longer lifespan. While ceramic wicks are very good, cotton is also excellent, and it isn’t hard to avoid dry-burning when using this material.
Bottom Or Top Filling
There has been an increase in the availability of top filling tanks due to the ease and convenience of refilling via this method. Instead of having to remove the tank’s base to fill from beneath it is simply necessary to remove the cap. However, a bottom-filling tank isn’t so difficult to refill either, and should not be considered to be a major issue if all of the other clearomizer features meet your requirements.
Almost all sub ohm tanks have some kind of control for the airflow, and this usually takes the form of a ring which can be adjusted and which is located at the base of the tank. However, the settings can vary widely. Some clearomizers have small-sized airflow holes which are ideal for those who vape mouth to lung while others have standard slots which have a more open airflow which is better for direct to lung inhaling.
In general, it is best to have more options available to you to adjust the airflow, but if you favour only one type of inhalation, you need to make certain that you’re choosing the device with an airflow to meet your requirements.
There are lots of additional features which may be found on tanks for sub-ohm vaping, and although these aren’t exactly vital for enjoying a high-quality vape, it’s worth bearing in mind what each of these options have to offer. Controls for the liquid flow enable the vaper to alter the speed at which the e-liquid reaches the coil and wick, allowing them to tailor the performance of their tank to perfectly match the e-liquid they’re using, while an anti-spit back mechanism helps them to avoid the unpleasant experience of hot e-juice being fired back up into the mouthpiece. Some other tanks feature additional drip tip airflow slots or cooling systems to help protect vapers from hot vapour, and these extras can be invaluable if you encounter this issue regularly.
Although the adage “you only get what you pay for” may be apt when you’re choosing a vape tank, it’s important to remember that there are many excellent atomiser tanks for sale which are very affordable, while there are also several expensive tanks which aren’t worth the extra money. Some of the top sub ohm tanks cost around £15 to £25. However, there are several that cost upwards of £30. You shouldn’t need to pay more than around £25, however, if you find a clearomizer that suits all of your vaping requirements you may find it worth your while to pay a little extra to get all of the features that you need.
While many vapers think that sub ohm tanks are the best ecig tank option, they don’t suit everyone. The vast choice of devices available for purchase today means that you’re sure to find something suitable for your requirements if you carefully weigh up your options, read reviews, keeping in mind exactly what you’re looking for in your tank. If you make your decision based on these tips, considering your preferred vaping style, you should find that you can find the perfect and best tank to help you to enjoy a fantastic vaping experience.
