The smokers of today turn to electronic cigarettes when they finally want to end the habit for good. It’s a fact that vaping is effective and some newer research is able to support this claim. The International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health published a new research project this week. The scientists found out after they spent 8 months following smokers that electronic cigarettes worked substantially well to minimise the cravings for tobacco and it also aided to help smokers completely kick the habit.
For 8 months there were 48 smokers followed by scientists to see how their smoking routines would be impacted by E-cigarettes. The participants had been separated into three groups and the first group behaved as a control that was only provided with tobacco cigarettes during the preliminary stage of the study. The two remaining groups were given E-cigarettes.
During this first stage, nobody had the urge to stop smoking. When in the 3rd month, there was a changeover made by the researchers to place the respondents into the 2nd phase and all of the 48 participants were given electronic cigarettes – including those in the controlled group. The respondents were asked to log in their vaping and smoking routines online and provide answers for the inquiries regarding their cigarette cravings.
It was a little surprising for the team to discover that the electronic cigarettes had greatly reduced the cravings for tobacco. In truth, those who craved cigarettes went straight to vaping and were satisfied. Nonetheless, lab testing has shown that vaping didn’t raise the baseline levels of carbon monoxide at all. Although out of all 48 participants there was no one willing to give up cigarettes, several of them did quit after they started vaping. In all actuality, 21% were totally free of tobacco after the 8-month study was completed. Cigarette consumption was divided by half for the additional 23% of the participants. After compiling the results of all three groups, the scientists discovered that everyone in the study had managed to decrease their consumption of cigarettes by 60% after vaping had begun.
It was concluded by Postdoctoral Researcher Dinska Van Gucht and Professor Frank Baeyens of the Psychology of Learning and Experimental Psychopathology Unit that “All the groups showed similar results after we introduced the e-cigs… With guidance on practical use, the nicotine e-cig offers many smokers a successful alternative for smoking less – or even quitting altogether. E-cig users get the experience of smoking a cigarette and inhale nicotine vapour, but do not suffer the damaging effects of a tobacco cigarette.”
It was pointed out by the scientists that very few cold turkey quitting attempts are ever a success. So for their great potential for smoking cessation, electronic cigarettes are certainly noteworthy. Baeyens stated, “By comparison: of all the smokers who quit using nothing but willpower, only 3 to 5 percent remain smoke-free for 6 to 12 months after quitting,”
It is quite remarkable that smokers with zero intent on quitting will completely stop using tobacco after they have started using E-cigarettes. This just seems to prove all over again, that E-cigarettes are a useful method that gives an alternative to smokers.
